To create better learners and inspired citizens through instrumental music instruction and ensemble performance
Preludes is a tuition free, school based music program, which helps youth develop focus, self-control, leadership skills, and teamwork through ensemble. Students experience success through community performance and practice.
Inspired by the success of El Sistema (the musical program that began in poor barrios of Venezuela and has spread worldwide) and the JAMM program (Juneau, Alaska Music Matters – Alaska’s first El Sistema program, the goal was not to create professional musicians, but to help young people become better learners and better citizens.
Preludes provide 1.5 hrs/wk of violin instruction for all Grade 1 students and 40 min./wk to all Kinders to ensure that all children have access to the lifelong benefits that music provides. Preludes pairs a certified school teacher with a community artist to build a safe, structured and creative environment for students. In addition, Grade 2 students may participate in an after school program with our artist instructor twice a week to build their violin playing skills.
